HEAD OF THE SPOKANE 2025
October 19, 2025
In their second meeting of the season with Gonzaga University, the Cougs turned in a strong performance at the Head of the Spokane Regatta. Cool autumn air and glassy water made for perfect racing conditions as the Cougars showed confidence and grit across all lineups.
The Men’s Varsity 8+ opened the day with a hard-fought race, going bow to bow with Gonzaga’s top crew and finishing in 15:25. The Second Varsity 8+ followed with one of the team’s best efforts of the day, posting a 16:09 and demonstrating sharp rhythm and focus from start to finish. The Third Varsity 8+ handled the mid-course turns with composure, maintaining solid speed to record a 17:02.
The Men’s Novice 8+ crews made their racing debut in Spokane, gaining valuable experience and showing real promise for the program’s future. The First Novice 8+ crossed in 17:06, while the Second Novice 8+ finished in 19:08 after steadily closing the gap on Gonzaga throughout the course.
From top to bottom, the Cougars displayed teamwork, determination, and early-season speed that point to a strong fall ahead. With two regattas now behind them, WSU sets its sights on wrapping up the season at the Head of the Lake in November.

“I was happy with the execution of our first travel race. It was refreshing to see all of the novice rowers doing the right things and working together to help the team run smoothly. I believe there was some speed left on the table, especially on the varsity side, but I’m confident we have the engines and physical ability to succeed. As the season progresses, I know the rowing will continue to develop and complement the fitness. I’m looking forward to continued training and a strong showing at Head of the Lake.”
“The novices brought tremendous energy to the regatta and really stepped up in their first travel race. They pushed themselves to apply everything they’ve learned in practice, showing focus and effort from start to finish. It was great to see their enthusiasm and hard work pay off all the way to the line.”
