October 10th, 2025

The Cougs opened their fall racing season on the Snake River, taking on Gonzaga University in the annual Head of the Snake Regatta. Despite cool temperatures, whitecaps, and a stiff northwest headwind, WSU crews showed grit and speed across all lineups.

The Men’s Varsity 8+, coxed by Finley Luther, went bow-to-bow with Gonzaga’s top crew in a competitive opener. The 2nd Varsity 8+, coxed by Aina Bishop, laid down one of the team’s fastest times of the day, while the 3rd Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+, coxed by Sarah Popowicz and Quinn Bush, showed consistency and control through the choppy mid-course.

The Men’s Novice 8+, coxed by Gerry Luviano, made a strong season debut, gaining valuable racing experience and closing the gap on Gonzaga throughout the course. Their performance highlighted the depth and energy within this year’s novice class.

Overall, the Cougs demonstrated composure, teamwork, and early-season speed despite the challenging conditions. With the first race of the season complete, the team now looks ahead to the Head of the Spokane later this month.

WSU M1v8+ Finishing in 18:13.3…

The 2V fought very hard from start to finish, and ultimately it was a very good start to the racing season. I think the group as a whole can make significant strides toward our goals and where we want to go.

The boys executed the race really well, even with the tough starting conditions. The first 1500 meters were pretty choppy, but after that we were able to open it up, start pushing, and finish strong. It was a great learning experience for us, and we’re looking forward to our next race.
