According to an April 8th, 2008 poll of the
ACRA coaches, our Varsity Lightweight 8 is ranked 10th in the nation based mostly on the results of the 2008 San Diego Crew Classic. Ranked 1st is the University of California, Berkley (Cal Lights) crew followed by the University of Delaware and University of Pittsburg crews. The men of the WSU Varsity Lightweight 8 vowed to have that ranking get better as the season continues and will not let the past events of this season to hinder what they have worked so hard to achieve. Championed by Coach Arthur Ericsson, Palouse Community Rowing is beginning the call for all those over the age of 12 years age in the greater Palouse area wanting to try the sport of rowing this Summer 2008 to sign up. This year's program offerings include: Junior Learn-to-Row, Adult Learn-to-Row, and Masters Crew and Coxing programs. No rowing experience is necessary for both Learn-to-Row programs as they are specifically designed to teach those with little or no experience the sport of rowing. Those who already have rowing or coxswain experience can take the Masters program to hone and refine their skills. All programs promote fun and learning in a no pressure atmosphere. To give the sport of rowing a try this Summer, please navigate to our sister site (row.wsu.edu) or click on the links below for more information. 2.3.08 (Updated 3.6.08) This year, it was decided that Class Day would be renamed to Cougar Crew Days in an effort to encourage all those involved with Cougar Crew to attend. This includes former oarsmen, coxswains, and coaches (Cougar Crew Alumni) as well as family and friends of both current and past oarsmen, coxswains, and coaches. Of course, all the events and festivities of years past are still happening. The only changes we are making is the addition of a Learn-to-Row session on Saturday for family and friends and giving a more friend and family friendly amostphere to some of the other events including the Banquet and Silent Auction. If you can make it to some or all of the events and festivities, please RSVP so we can get a better idea of how many people are attending and can plan accordingly. Thank you!
More information provided on our Cougar Crew Days page. 1.15.08 (Updated: 3.6.08) Rent-a-Rower is back for the 2008 Spring season and ready to help our local Pullman/Moscow community! We hope to impress you with the same resposible work ethic and performance we have always showed in the past. 1.11.08 From the Webmaster: My hope is that vistors of this site (alumni, rowers, etc.) will subscribe to the new news and events feed in order to get instant updates when something changes on CougarCrew.com and navigate to this site to see what has changed. I also hope this helps people by simplifying their lives just that much more and makes CougarCrew.com easier to navigate. Still to come for CougarCrew.com is a possible new site design/layout. I have been reading up on CSS lately and have some really awesome ideas in the works, which I hope you all will get to enjoy soon. It has been requested that the new site design include a Flash photo slideshow of alumni pictures for which I have given an example on the site (above). Any suggestions, questions, or comments are always welcome. Please e-mail me if you have any. Thank you and GO COUGS, Tim Duffey
1.9.08 Take a look at just a few of the photos dug up from the Men's Crew archives (above). More photos to come. 11.27.07 A tradition during every visit to the Brevick House is the "scale test" put on by the Brevick Family. The test consists of a weight scale and a rower's/coxswain's bare hand squeeze upon that weight scale for the maximum amount of force that person can exert upon the scale. The rower/coxswain gets one chance (sometimes two), to show off his/her muscular squeezing prowess. In this all or nothing bout, the winning squeezer receives bragging rights for the year. The results have been posted to the website for all to see. There is a link both below this news release and next to the corresponding race event on the 2007-2008 Season Schedule the team was visiting the Brevick House for (in this case, Falcon Freemont 4 Miler). 2007 Brevick Family Weight Scale Test Results 11.21.07 With the Head of the Lake Regatta results have been posted it is probably apparent by now that the races did go as far as they were supposed. Instead of the usual 4000 meter head race, the course was shortened to a mere 2100 meters and delayed about 45 minutes from its original scheduled start time. The reason...Mother Nature was having a bad day again and decided to vent her frustration for the second year in a row on the event. With bone chilling wind driven rain and waves, she showed her ferocity on the helpless crews who gathered in wait just outside the entrance of the Montlake Cut in Union Bay. The WSU Junior Varsity 8+ reported that the waves were freely pouring over the gunnels almost swamping the crew just outside Gas Works Park on the way over to the start of the race. The officials, knowing how bad the conditions were, delayed the races in the hopes that the weather would later improve. The officials definitely did not want a repeat of the year before when the races were entirely cancelled (due to severe weather) much to the dismay of many teams who traveled from afar to compete. When the officials realized that the wait could take a while they sent the now hundred or so men and women crews around in a circle around Union Bay to try and keep the athletes warm. As the wait neared a half an hour, all 19 of the University of Washington boats entered into the Head of the Lake Regatta called it a day and rowed back to their boathouse (conveniently) on Union Bay. When the 45 minute mark finally rolled around, the officials called the boats in order to the starting line and told them to race only about 2100 meters. Once finished, they were to row safely back to the docks. Cold and wet the crews pulled their best under the conditions and finished with respectable times. Even the WSU Alumni 8+, entered into the Master's event, did very well considering some of the crew had not been in a boat for a while. Head of the Lake Regatta Results
11.4.07 (Updated 11.8.07) The results have been posted for the Falcon Fremont 4 Miler and reactions are mixed. The WSU Varsity Heavyweight (Boat B, on the results page) and Lightweight (Boat A) 8+both showed the competition what Washington State University Rowing is all about. The two boats turned in, respectively, both the first and second fastest times of the day beating Seattle University's (SU) time by at least two minutes on a roughly 6500 meter course. The Lightweights found 5 seconds on the Heavyweights that they didn't have the week before, but the Heavyweights still definitely showed their speed and power. Not to be left out of course, the Novice 8+'s did very well too. Facing off against the Lake Union Crew (LUC), the Novice A and B boats took second and first, respectively, beating the competition by at least a minute and half. The Varsity rowers also competed in the 4+'s races later that day and all in all did pretty well. Going up against Seattle University (SU) again, along with Commencement Bay Rowing Club's (CBRC) crew and the Lake Union Crew (LUC), the Varsity Heavyweight 4+ (B) took second and Lightweight 4+ (A) first. The Junior Varsity 4+ (C), who did that same race, also put in a great time, but were unfortunately disqualified for reasons related to inexperience. With the Falcon Fremont 4 Miler under their trou pull strings (belts), the Varsity is getting ready and will return to Seattle for the Head of the Lake Regatta races coming up this Sunday, November 11. The team is entered into three events for the day: the Open 8+, the Collegiate JV 8+, the Open 4+ races. Also proudly representing Cougar Crew is our very own Alumni 8+ entered into the Masters 8+ A-E+ event. As it is recorded in the books, from bow to stern: Dan Thayer, Jason Lackie, Chris Seaman, Arthur Ericsson, Chris Jantzen, Dave Preston, Peter Brevick, Danny Brevick, with Julia Anderson coxing. The Alumni race, along with the rest of the races, should be very exciting to watch. So if you are in the Seattle area for the CCAA meeting the day before or just want to see some great Cougar Rowing, feel free to come out to the Head of the Lake this Sunday. We could always use just that one more "GO COUGS!" to pull us through that finish line. Images of the Falcon Fremont 4 Miler (Provided by Green Lake Crew's website) >Mark Your Calendar: CCAA Board Meeting coming up on Saturday, November 10, 2007 from 1 to 4 PM! 10.28.07 The excitement mounted as the entire Cougar Crew neared the Ken Abbey Boathouse Friday, October 26, 2007. Ten rowers and one coxswain on the team were the only people with knowledge of its existence. Besides these handful of people, no coach or any other person had any idea what lay in slings inside the boathouse. After the entire team gathered outside, Head Coach Arthur Ericsson opened the boathouse door… The air tensed with anticipation of the coach's reaction. Unfortunately, Arthur walked right past it to open the garage door and never saw that which the eleven people had kept a secret for so long. So with a little nudge and coaxing, Arthur came back into the boathouse to see what the entire team was by now giggling and gasping about. What lay before him was a near mint condition, <170#, crimson with silver trim, lightweight Hudson eight! It was the gracious donation of our very own fourth year Varsity rower Brandon Caesar who paid out of his own pocket for the Canadian Women's National Team's, Head of the Charles winning boat. The rightfully named "Caesar" after its donator, was rowed for the first time by the WSU Varsity Lightweights in the Head of the Snake the day of the reveal. 10.28.07 The men and women of WSU Men's Crew put up a great fight against Gonzaga University this last Friday as the Varsity 8+ gained one second back on GU from last weekend. Instead of a 5 second defeat at the Head of the Spokane, the eight men and one coxswain dug deep and found a second they knew they had, ending up with just a 4 second margin separating the two teams at the Head of the Snake! Considering that the men and women of WSU Men's Crew were logging 2,000,000 meters for the Row-A-Thon fundraiser all week and had very little water time, anticipation is mounting for future face offs against GU. The other WSU Crews, fought hard against Gonzaga as well both weekends. Hopes were high for the Lightweights with the addition of a new Hudson 8 shell ("Caesar") to the WSU Men's Crew fleet during the week, but GU's Junior Varsity 8+ still added on to their commanding lead from the weekend before. The Novice pulled their guts out, but again GU's Crew proved to be a powerhouse to be reckoned with. All crews realized that with continued practice and determination, though, victory against GU will be within their grasps. >Mark Your Calendar: Fremont 4-Miler coming up on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 8:15 AM! More Images of the Head of the Snake 10.22.07 The Cougar Crew Alumni Association (CCAA) will be holding a meeting on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at the Seattle Yacht Club (1807 E Hamlin, Seattle, WA). The meeting is open to all who are interested. It will be held in the Commodore Room of the SYC from 1 to 4 PM. Head Coach Arthur Ericsson has organized a WSU Alumni 8+ to be entered into this year's Head of the Lake race. He invites all interested to come out and watch the Alumni 8+ as well as the WSU Masters this Sunday. Any questions, please contact Arthur. >Mark your calendar: Alumni Class Day 2008 is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, 2008! More info to come... 10.21.07 Dear Cougar Crew Alumni and Friends, As many of you know, this past spring held some fantastic results for the Cougar Crew. Dozens of medals were won overall by both varsity and novice; lightweight and heavyweight. The heavyweights were able to capture silver medals in the Varsity 4+ events at both the WIRA Championships, as well as the PCRC Championships in Sacramento. The heavyweight Novice 4+ also won Silver at PCRC’s. Most notable though were the medals that were brought home by the Varsity Lightweights of this past spring, with silver won at the WIRA Championships in the Lightweight Varsity 8+, and gold won in both the WIRA Lightweight Varsity 4+ and PCRC Lightweight Varsity 8+ events. A driving force behind the development and improvement of the Crew this past year was being able to practice in suitable fours that the program could also race in. This was made possible by initiating a full fledged fundraising campaign aimed at upgrading the Cougar Men’s Crew with two new Hudson Fours, one made specifically for Lightweight rowing, and the other for Heavyweight rowing. With the help of a loan from University Recreation, we were able to purchase both fours at a price of roughly $30,000. The fours were purchased slightly used, and the team took that into consideration because although the shells were expensive, it helped reduce costs by about 18% and made them that much more affordable. With the help of donations and the CCAA, the Crew has been able to pay off over half of the owed amount for the shells. Currently though, the team still owes approximately $14,000 before the racing shells are fully paid off. The team greatly appreciates all of the ongoing donations that have been made to the program that are helping us work off this debt. However, there is still work to be done before the original goal of the “New Fours Campaign” is realized. We ask again that the alumni continue to make donations to help the program pay off these fours and get out of debt. The fours have proved themselves very capable of helping achieve victory, as they were rowed by those medal-winning crews last spring in the lightweight and heavyweight events. The fours have also been named: The Lightweight four after CCAA member, Class Day auction organizer, and former coxswain Lisa Coble Curtis. The Heavyweight four named after WSU Alumni Association member and frequent donor Janie Huhta. Now, all that is left to do is pay them off, and make them full property of the Crew. It has been shown that WSU Men’s Crew has some of the most dedicated alumni in the country, and that continued donations to The Campaign will help immensely, especially with the finish line so closely in sight. The fours will undergo a boat dedication ceremony at the 2008 Class Day celebration on March 15th, and it is possible that the Crew can also celebrate having paid the shells off in full, but we will need your help. Thank you very much for your support, and GO COUGS! Karl Huhta, Commodore
