Pac - 10's and PCRC's Washington State makes the trip once again (2nd time in the last month) to Sacramento, CA to race in the Pac 10 Rowing Championships and Pacific Coast Rowing Champisonships. Check back for complete story. PCRC Results Pac-10 Championships Results Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships Last weekend (April 28th & 29th) the WSU Mens Crew traveled to Sacramento, California for the first of their two conference championships. This was the WIRA (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association) championships in which WSU entered nine of the ten events and left Lake Natoma with one gold, one bronze and two silvers medals. The conference consists of 30 different universities from all over the western US for the men’s events alone. “More than half of our roster is lightweights this year,” noted Head Coach Arthur Ericsson “so we built our entries around them. Read the Whole Story - Results Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championships - News Release Cougar Lightweights win 19 Medals at WIRA Championships Cougs win 24 medals total; Lightweight Varsity 4+ wins Gold Sacramento, California - The recent resurgence in the lightweight program over the last four years at Washington State has made the Cougars a force to be reckoned with along the west coast. As the program continues to build momentum to return to the lightweight dominance of the 1980s, the Cougs continued to take steps in the right direction as the lightweights hauled in 19 medals at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) conference championships. The Cougar lightweight Varsity 8+ won silver medals on Saturday afternoon in a very exciting race that can only mean good things for the future. This was the first time in many years the Cougars were able to field a Varsity lightweight 8+ for Spring racing. And with only 1 senior in the boat, the Cougs have their sights on gold in the future. Speaking of gold, the Varsity Lightweight 4+ was able to win just that on Sunday in an amazing race that saw the Cougars win their first WIRA Championship. The Cougars won the race by over 2 lengths of open water, and now have a trophy to bring home to Pullman. The best the Cougars have finished in this event previous to this weekend was two years ago when they won bronze. More evidence of the growing strength of the lightweight program at WSU. Fawley Cup News Release Novice 8+ wins at Fawley Cup for first time in 10 years Varsity 8+ unable to defend Fawley Cup trophy against Bulldogs Spokane, WA - The Cougars headed North for the annual Fawley Cup regatta against the rival Bulldogs from Gonzaga University. The day saw both the positive and negative, as one Cougar boat emerged victorious from the regatta, the other Cougar boats were unable to get the win. The lone highlight from the morning came in the Novice 8+ race, where 10 years to the day since the last N8+ win at Fawley Cup, the first-year Cougs came through and defeated Gonzaga by about 2 seconds. "This is what you work for," said novice oarsman Will Hollingbery, "All the morning practices and workouts on the ergs... It feels amazing to be apart of making some history here today." In the Varsity 8+ race, the Bulldogs were simply too much for the Cougars, as the Zags powered their way to the victory and regained the Fawley Cup. After the Cougars' amazing upset in this race last year, the Cougs were unable to do it again against the No. 1-ranked V8+ in the WIRA Conference. The Cougars will face the Bulldogs again next weekend at the WIRA Championships in Sacramento, California. ![]() CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR MORE INFORMATION! San Diego Crew Classic Once again the Cougar Crew traveled to San Diego to take part in the annual San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego California. By the looks of the results, the novice eight made a very impressive showing, and crossed the finish line first in the petite final. Great Job Novice! The Varsity boat placed 3rd in the 3rd final of the Cal Cup event, and as always it was a very tough field to face. The strongest crews in the nation row in this event, and we know that the varsity eight will take this experience and hit it hard during the next week of training. Check back with us next week when the WSU Cougar Crew faces off against the University of Washington in Pullman. 2007 Palouse Community Rowing Once again our own Arthur Ericsson, WSU Men's Rowing Head Coach, is directing the Palouse Community Rowing Program down on the Snake River. Current "Fours Campaign" Donation Status Here! Dear Cougar Crew Alumni and Friends, Cougar Crew is coming off of an exceptional spring season, with a Fawley Cup victory, a third place Varsity 8 finish in our WIRA Conference, a first place finish in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships Open 4 for the second year in a row, and a fifth place finish in the V4+ at the IRA National Championships. This has been the best year for Cougar Crew in over a decade. Meanwhile, behind the headlines, it is quite possible the team is now doing more hours of fundraising each year than ever. We take pride in being able to cover all of the fixed costs the team requires, as well as subsidizing much of the travel costs to get each rower to all of the races we compete in each year. But we have been at our limit on fundraising, and we have not been able to reserve any money towards the replacement of our most expensive and prized inventory, the rowing shells themselves. While we have some very important long-term goals of developing our endowment account to help secure one of our most essential and costly expenses, that of coaches’ salaries, we ask you now to help support some immediate equipment needs that are long overdue. We are seeking donations from our alumni for the purchase of two new racing 4’s. The 4’s are the building blocks of fast 8’s, they are the workhorses of intense seat-racing sessions, and it is often the case that we send our fastest 4+ to compete at the national championships, and often find ourselves nervously scrambling to rent an unfamiliar boat. What do we have now? Three ancient training 4’s which have flat bottoms and clogs for shoes. They are all more than thirteen years old. And one oddball shell that we can’t sell because nobody wants to buy it. We don’t have a high level 4 for our heavyweights to race in, and we don’t have a fast 4 for our rejuvenated lightweight program to race in. We have greatly appreciated the periodic donations that have generously been given over the past several years. But it has been a while since the team has made a deliberate alumni request of this manner, and now the time has come. Here is our challenge to each of you. To be a part of our New 4’s Campaign. We seek to buy two new 4’s, one heavyweight and one lightweight. And just as the rivalry between Cougar lightweights and heavyweights is as old and fierce as Cougar Crew itself, so too will it be for this campaign. Former lightweights can make a donation towards our new lightweight shell, and former heavyweights can make a donation towards our new heavyweight 4. Donors will be able to see this fundraising duel unfold as the race unfolds on our website. Each donation will support either the Lightweights or the Heavyweights and will be updated on a regular basis onto our fundraising racecourse. Each crew will have their own lane and the finish line for each crew will be the $16,000 marker, the cost of a new 4+. Let’s show that Cougar Crew has alumni as committed as any in the country. These donations will allow Cougar Crew to be even more competitive than it has been, and will be something that alumni and the current crew can be equally proud of. In order for us to purchase these boats and have them by Class Day, we need you to make your donation by the end of this year, December 31st, 2006. It is our hope these shells will await your appreciation at our upcoming Class Day extravaganza. Thank you for your support! Chris Seaman, Commodore Danny Brevick, CCAA Alumni Relations, Commodore 2003-05 Arthur Ericsson, Head Coach Dan Thayer, Novice Coach All donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE, and can now be made online through our website which is directly linked to the WSU Foundation. It’s fast and secure. Online donors must indicate LWT 4 or HVYWT 4 in the subject line when completing your transaction.
