Washington State raced in the Covered Bridge Regatta, Dexter Lake, on Saturday, April 6th. The team had an excellent outing.

This year, the regatta featured two separate races. The morning race and the afternoon races were each considered finals. In years past, the morning races were often considered to be heats for the afternoon races.

The main takeaway is that WSU finished first and second in both the Men’s Novice Eight (MN8) race and in the Men’s Varsity Eight (MV8) races. WSU also won the Men’s Varsity Double Sculls (M2X) and finished fourth (of 6) in the Novice Men’s Fours (MN4) races. All told, the WSU men had 43 different oarsmen and coxswains competing… 27 of them won races.

The WSU Club women won both the Novice Women’s Four (WN4) and the Women’s Varsity Fours (WV4) races.

On the day, the men’s and women’s teams combined to win seven of the nine races they entered. WSU also finished second in four races that the team won.

Athletes Cooper Romey (1n8 stroke seat) & Archer Plotz (1v8 4 seat) had this to say about the team’s performance:

Romey - “I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the racing season. I was very happy with the patience and relaxation felt throughout the boat, as well as the effort that everyone put in. I was especially pleased to see our second novice boat giving us a tough race and pushing us to give our all. I am very excited to see what we will be capable of in the coming races starting with the GW Invitational this weekend.”

Plotz - “The 1V's two races this weekend went well, and as the first official race of the season, it created a solid foundation to build upon. In the first race, we had a pretty solid start and were able to hold a nice rhythm for 500m, but the middle 1k could have been better tech-wise. There were some variables, but we handled them well. The second race felt better overall, and we held better tech through the middle. This was a great start to the season and things are looking good, I am excited to see where we go from here.”
